Reading Group: The Jakarta Method

By the mid 1960s the Communist Party of Indonesia had a base of 25 million people, making it the biggest communist party in the world outside China and the Soviet Union. In 1965 forces under Suharto carried out a series of mass killings targetting the Party and its supporters, one of the most consequential anticommunist crimes of the twentieth century.

These mass killings, and the severe political repression that followed for over 30 years under Suharto, were supported by the U.S. led imperialist alliance.

Australia has long been a junior member of this alliance, and was a firm supporter of Suharto throughout his dictatorship. Vincent Bevins’ The Jakarta Method documents 1965 and other imperialist crimes across the globe in the twentieth century.

For those of us living in Australia, an outpost of the U.S. in the Asia-Pacific, it is essential to study the history of imperialism and anticommunism in our region, so that we can better oppose them.
