Perserikatan Sosialis Statement

A protest scene featuring demonstrators holding flags, with a banner that reads 'Under the Dark Cloud of Authoritarianism' highlighting issues of militarism in Indonesia and West Papua.

Below is a statement from Perserikatan Sosialis (Socialist Union) from Indonesia, on the current protests and how the working class should respond to the crackdown by the Subianto government. Comrades from Perserikatan are currently visiting Australia. Red Ant is hosting a talk by Neysia Novaristia on September 10th on the topic of the “The rise of mlitarism in Indonesia and West Papua and the need to build International Solidarity“.

After Indonesian President, Prabowo Subianto, insisted firm action be taken against protesters who were still resisting on the streets, the police and military escalated their repression against the protesters. The people must strengthen their solidarity, must reinforce and clarify their political demands to draw a line of demarcation with the elite. The struggle of workers and the people can only survive when we are all able to build resistance committees in factories, on campuses, in villages, in rural areas, throughout Indonesia.

Free our comrades now—unconditionally!

Slash the budget and disarm POLRI and every repressive tool of the Prabowo–Gibran regime!

Arrest, prosecute, and jail the butchers and officials guilty of human rights crimes!

NINE DEMANDS OF WORKERS AND THE PEOPLE

1. Abolish privileges and cut the salaries of state officials, senior officers, non-ministerial agency officials, commissioners, and directors of state-owned enterprises to the average wage, for free education, free healthcare, public subsidies, and the welfare of workers and the people.

2. Cut the budgets of institutions, ministries, and offices unrelated to public welfare — including the Ministry of Defense, the Police, the Attorney General’s Office, the National Intelligence Agency, the House of Representatives, and the People’s Consultative Assembly — for free education, free healthcare, public subsidies, and the welfare of workers and the people.

3. Raise workers’ wages and reduce the people’s taxes.

4. Impose higher progressive taxes on large corporations, banks, and conglomerates.

5. Release our comrades immediately and unconditionally!

6. Arrest, prosecute, and jail the official responsible for human rights violations!

7. Slash the budget and disarm the Indonesian National Police (POLRI) and every repressive tool of the Prabowo-Gibran regime!

8. Military back to barracks!

9. Seize all assets of corruptors and tax-evading conglomerates, for free education, free healthcare, public subsidies, and the welfare of workers and the people.
